AEO

Answer Engine Optimization Services

Someone asks ChatGPT for the best supplier in your category. It names four companies. You are not one of them. Nothing on your site changed, your rankings did not move, and no report told you it happened.

That is the failure mode answer engine optimization exists to fix. Google now answers a large share of searches on the results page itself, and assistants answer the rest somewhere you cannot see. Being the tenth blue link matters less every quarter. Being the source the answer is built from matters more.

AEO is the work of making a business legible to those systems: structured so it can be parsed, specific enough to be worth quoting, and corroborated widely enough to be trusted.

What answer engine optimization actually changes

Classic SEO optimises for a ranked list. AEO optimises for extraction. An assistant reads a page, decides which claims are reliable, and rewrites them into an answer with a citation. Three things decide whether your page survives that process.

The first is structure. A claim buried in a paragraph of marketing copy is hard to lift cleanly. A claim stated in one sentence, near a heading that matches the question, is easy.

The second is specificity. Assistants quote numbers, named methods, prices, tolerances and dates. They rarely quote adjectives. A page that says it is a leading provider gives a model nothing to work with. A page that says it ships in fourteen days gives it a sentence.

The third is corroboration. Models weight claims that appear in more than one place. A fact that lives only on your own site is weaker than the same fact repeated in a directory, a trade publication and a customer review.

Where the work starts

Every engagement starts by measuring what the assistants currently say about you, because almost nobody knows. I run your brand and your category questions through the major assistants and record what comes back: whether you are named, what you are named for, which competitors appear beside you, and which sources the answer was built from.

That baseline usually produces one of three findings. You are absent, which is the common case. You are present but described wrongly, using an old positioning or a product you retired. Or you are present and correct, in which case the work is defending the position and widening it into adjacent questions.

Why most pages are invisible to answer engines

The pattern repeats across the sites I audit, and it is rarely a technical fault.

  1. The page answers a topic, not a question. Assistants match on questions. A page titled after a category will lose to a page titled after the thing someone actually asked.
  2. The specifics live in a PDF, an image or a table nobody marked up. The most quotable material on an industrial site is usually the spec sheet, and it is usually unreadable.
  3. Everything is hedged. Copy written to avoid commitment gives a model nothing firm to cite, so it cites a competitor who committed.
  4. There is no entity for the business to attach to. No consistent name, no consistent address, no schema tying the pieces together across the web.

Each of those is fixable, and none of them requires more blog posts.

How this differs from buying more content

The instinct when visibility drops is to publish more. On most sites that makes the problem worse, because it adds pages competing for the same weak signal instead of strengthening the pages that already carry commercial intent.

AEO work is mostly surgical. It rewrites the pages that already matter so they can be quoted, marks up the facts that already exist so they can be parsed, and builds the corroboration that makes those facts credible. New pages come later, and only where a real question has no home.

Starting the engagement

Most clients start with the audit, because it produces the baseline the programme is measured against and it ends with a document you keep either way.

If you already know you are absent from AI answers and want the fixes rather than the diagnosis, the engagement can start at the restructuring stage instead. The first conversation establishes which of those you need, and it is short.

What the engagement includes

  • A citation baseline. What ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews currently say about your brand and your category, recorded question by question so the change is measurable.
  • A quotability rewrite. The pages that carry commercial intent, restructured so each answers a real question in extractable form, with the specifics stated plainly rather than implied.
  • Entity and schema work. Organization, Service, Product and FAQ markup that ties your pages into one consistent entity, plus the consistency fixes that make a model confident it is reading about one company.
  • Corroboration. The off-site repetition that turns a claim on your website into a fact the model believes, built from directories, profiles and publications that already rank for your category.
  • A tracking loop. Monthly re-measurement of the same question set, so citation gain or loss shows up as a number rather than an impression.

How the work runs

  1. Measure. Run your brand and category questions through every major assistant and record the answers, the citations and the competitors named beside you.
  2. Diagnose. Work out why the answer looks the way it does: which source it was built from, which of your pages could have supplied it, and what stopped them.
  3. Restructure. Rewrite the commercially important pages so the claims are single sentences under matching headings, and mark up the facts that were already there.
  4. Corroborate. Repeat the load-bearing facts in the places models cross-check, so the claim stops depending on your own domain alone.
  5. Re-measure. Run the same question set again on a fixed cadence. The metric is citations won, not traffic.

Proof

For a distributor in an industrial category, the same discipline moved a catalogue that assistants could not read into one they quote by part specification. The write-up is in the industrial distribution case study.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO optimises for position in a ranked list of links. AEO optimises for being the source an AI answer is built from and cited against. They share technical foundations, but the unit of success is different: a ranking versus a citation. Most sites need both, and the same page can serve both if it is structured for extraction.

How long does answer engine optimization take to show results?

Citation changes usually appear faster than ranking changes, because assistants re-read source pages more often than Google re-evaluates a competitive ranking. Expect the baseline in the first fortnight, structural fixes through the first two months, and measurable citation movement from roughly month two onward. Corroboration work compounds and is slower.

Can you guarantee my brand appears in ChatGPT answers?

No, and anyone who guarantees it is selling something they do not control. Assistants change their retrieval and ranking behaviour without notice. What is controllable is whether your pages can be parsed, whether your claims are specific enough to quote, and whether they are corroborated elsewhere. Those three things move the odds, and they are what the engagement measures.

Do I need AEO if my rankings are still fine?

Rankings holding while traffic falls is the standard early signal that answers are being served without the click. If your impressions are steady and your clicks are declining, the position is intact and the click is being absorbed. That is the moment to start, not after the rankings go.

Does this work for a small business or only for large brands?

It works for small businesses, and often better, because the category questions are less contested. A specialist supplier with genuinely specific facts is easier for a model to quote than a large brand whose pages are written in generalities. The constraint is having real specifics to state, not company size.
